Common practice
in cabling Ethernet networks is to connect each RJ45 outlet directly
back to an assigned edge switch port using structured category cabling
(CAT 5/5E/6/7). This practice is extremely costly in Ethernet port
costs, cabling materials and labour.
It also
takes up excessive space in cabinets and ceiling voids. The problem
is exacerbated by the trend towards more and more outlets for convergent
services such as VOIP and media streams.
The Local Distribution Unit (LDU) from theWandsworth Group has been designed
to reduce cabling costs by providing a local 7-port Ethernet distribution
switch for each room, suite of rooms or work area. The self-contained switch
is housed within a standard flush electrical wall box. It presents two
RJ45 ports on an ultra-slim faceplate in a variety of finishes. There are
an additional four rear ports for cabling to remote RJ45 outlets, two of
which have been designed to deliver 48 volt Power over Ethernet (PoE).
Wandsworth supplies a range of data, VOIP and IPTV outlets in a range of
finishes to match both the LDU and the electrical accessories. The seventh
port on the LDU is the inbound data feed which also provides power from
the Ethernet edge switch; this has the additional benefit of inherent reliability
from no moving parts or heat generation. The product is CE marked, has
UL approval and is suitable for use anywhere in the world with industry
standard Ethernet installations. It is recommended for hotels, apartments,
office buildings and university residences.
