Common practice
for the distribution of media content around a building is to use
coaxial cabling, splitters, and amplifiers at extremely high cost
in terms of cabling, materials and labour. It is also common for
picture quality to be degraded by this type of infrastructure, especially
in large buildings with long cable runs.
Media
distribution can now share the building's structured cabling infrastructure
with no loss of picture quality!
Media Gateway from theWandsworth Group has been designed to operate over
the building's structured category cabling (CAT5/5E/6/7). It will enable
the use of televisions or displays anywhere in the building to receive
high quality MPEG digital TV channels, digital radio and distribute local
or home produced content, using IP Multicast. The quality of the picture
and audio is identical regardless of the number of Media Gateway units
deployed. Each unit is supplied with an IR remote control. The Media Gateway
unit receives IP Multicast content from theWandsworth IPTV Servers or Application
and Content Servers, and suitably configured core and distribution Ethernet
switches.
Media Gateway is a totally self-contained unit in a standard electrical
wall box. Its power is received using Power over Ethernet (PoE) via the
Wandsworth Local Distribution Unit (LDU), or from a suitable 3rd party
PoE switch, thus reducing heat and unsightly DC power bricks. The product
is ideally suited to hotels, apartments, office buildings, university residences
and even shopping areas. Media Gateway is fully programmable, allowing
content to be defined by area - for example, reception areas can display
marketing and information or be restricted to news media only.
